Mastering Your Cleaning Routine

Why Leaving Mould Is a Bad Idea

by Yolanda Watts

According to the World Health Organization, about 15 per cent of homes around the globe have issues with dampness and a significant proportion of these will also suffer from mould. In countries where there is a warm climate — like Australia — some estimates suggest that mould would be found within a quarter of all homes. This means that mould is often tolerated in both dwelling places as well as places of work when it really out to be dealt with professionally. Why should you invest in a cleaning service that is experienced with mould removal? Read on to find out.

Reoccurring Mould

The first thing to say about mould and mildew is that it is surprisingly hard to get rid of under your own steam. Even when you think that every last trace of it has been scrubbed away and dealt with by a mould removal cleaning product, it is likely to make a comeback, sometimes in as little as a few months. This is particularly so in rooms that get wet, such as bathrooms, and it is also a major issue in locations that don't get much airflow. If you want to get rid of mould once and for all, it is best to call in the experts.

Exposure to Mould

Of course, black mould on a wall or ceiling looks unappealing. Its appearance is just one problem, however. What the presence of mould will mean for your health is an entirely different matter. Spores from untreated mould have several well-known effects on respiratory health. Obstructive lung disease is just one awful condition that is associated with the presence of mould in homes and places of work. Asthma sufferers also tend to have more problem with breathing if mould removal is not taken seriously. Some poisons are to be found in mould spores, too, which are known as mycotoxins. If you have a bad reaction to them, then you could face symptoms like bleeding gums, vomiting and even blurred vision.

Fungal Infections

In some cases, mould is so prevalent within a property that it is possible to contract infections directly. These tend to be fungal infections that either get into your sinuses or your digestive system. Either way, they can be serious, especially if you already have an underlying health condition to take into consideration. Such infections are sometimes also parasitic — such as athlete's foot, for example. All of them are much less prevalent in buildings which have undergone a thorough mould removal process.
